Budai – The Laughing Buddha
This impressive cast-metal statue of Budai brings a joyful and grounding presence into any room. Standing 26 inches tall with hands raised in celebration 20 inches apart, the sculpture has substantial scale and remarkable detail.
The figure is crafted from hollow-cast brass and hand-finished with an antique-style patina. The natural green verdigris oxidation visible in the crevices highlights its copper-rich composition and adds authentic aged character to the robe and ornaments.
This particular piece was recently acquired from the curated collection of Dean Fengya, the artist and founder of the former immersive Point Pleasant retail-art installation Globetrotter. In Dean’s shop, artifacts like this were chosen for their ability to invite curiosity, calm, and connection. Now it continues that mission in a new space.
Budai is celebrated in Chinese tradition as a symbol of:
• happiness
• generosity
• abundance
• good fortune
Because of its large size and heavy weight (approximately 40 pounds), this sculpture carries a premium, high-quality feel that cannot be matched by lightweight reproductions. It works beautifully in entryways, offices, meditation rooms, or living spaces that welcome a calming focal point.
